University of Gujrat

Hafaz Hayyat, Gujrat ,
The town of Gujrat is of modern origin, but it occupies the site of an ancient city the foundation of which is attributed to Raja Bachan Pal, a Surajbansi Rajput, who emigrated from the lower Gangetic Doab. The ancient name of the city was Udanagri (the everlasting or sweet-smelling city). According to General Cunningham and Captain H Mackenzie, the construction of present walled city of Gujrat on the ruins of Udanagri is attributed to Ali Khan, a Gujjar, whose name is strangely like that of Alahana, the Raja of Gujara, who was defeated by Sangkara Varmma between AD 883 and AD 901. Captain Mackenzie is of the view that the city was rebuilt by Rani Gujran, the wife of Badr Sen, who was the son of Raja Rasalu of Sialkot. Gujrat was again restored as a market and simultaneously as a military base in the reign of Mughal king Akbar the Great. During the British rule, Gujrat was made the district headquarters (in those days it also included the present district of Mandi Bahauddin). The educational history of Gujrat is marvellous. The Zamindar Educational Association established a high school in 1921 and Zamindar College in 1937. The college attracted the students from the districts of Attock, Jhelum, Mianwali and Sargodha, as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). For this reason, Gujrat was declared as the Khita-e-Yunan ((part of Greece) of Punjab. In 2003, the Punjab government, led by then-Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, established UOG on the vacant land adjoining the shrine of saint Hafiz Muhamad Hayat, who lived in the Mughal period.

In the year 2000 when the world was moving towards a new millennium, South Asian Educational Promotion Network was making plans to develop educational facilities in Pakistan. They were in search of such leadership which could fulfill their aims and make that project a success. They found the leadership in the form of Prof. Dr. Ch. Abdul Rehman, who was a young passionate person with lots of enthusiasm to do big for his country and to bring a positive change in the society. The amalgamation/ meeting of two giants was fruitful and the first campus with the name of Superior started working in 31-Tipu Block, New Garden Town, Lahore. The right mix of team was selected to sum this passionate institution. It was the purity of purpose that in the first year Superior had an enrollment of 1000 students. The message was in air for all competitors that ‘SUPERIOR IS HERE TO STAY’. Next year the number doubled and then rest is ‘history’. Every year the name started to rise and grew more respected in the eyes of all academic circles. In 2003 Superior got NOC from the Govt. of the Punjab. Just after a year it was elevated to another level through the charter. Superior Group of Colleges was recognized as a degree awarding institute. In 2007 Superior decided to expand and the search started for a project director who could fulfill this dream. As it is always said in Superior that you have to run after your dreams to achieve them. This attitude was found in a person who was recognized as the best managerial resource. The board of directors showed their full confidence on Mr. Rana Adeel Mumtaz and was hopeful that he could bring the desired results. The task was taken up and colleges were opened in Faisalabad, Okara, Multan and Raheem Yar Khan. Here also a phenomenal growth was shown in the first year. This project underwent great success and in 2008 Sargodha campus was opened and in the first year it was a mega success. Now in 2011 a new college has opened in Gujrat. This is not the end Superior family is still looking for new avenues. Like any success story, Superior’s tale of miracles does not end here, it has been transformed from the fastest growing institute of Pakistan to “FIRST INTERNATIONAL STANDARD INSTITUTE OF PAKISTAN".

University of Gujrat

HistoryThe University of Gujrat is one of the new major public sector universities in Punjab. The university was established under Act IX of 2004 by Government of Punjab, Pakistan on February 23, 2004 to cater for the higher education needs of the population of Central Punjab which includes districts of Gujrat, Sialkot and Gujranwala in addition to city of Wazirabad. These districts are popularly known as the Export Triangle of Pakistan due to various manufacturing industries operating in the area. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817–1898) founder of Aligarh Muslim University had named the region around Gujrat as "Khita-e-Younan", or "territory resembling ancient Greece", in reference to the high number of educational institutes present in the area in the 19th century. The University is promoting research and development culture in the area. A large number of students from Bhimber Azad Kashmir also study in the university. The Main Campus has been named after a local sufi saint Hafiz Muhammad Hayat. Situated prominently in the University of Gujrat campus, the shrine of Hafiz Hayat is an exquisite complex in terms of its architecture, site planning and landscape design. It is located on a mound six feet high above the Terre plain. The site contains a haveli, summerhouse (baradari), mosque, four tombs of varying dimensions, several graves, seven wells and numerous old trees. The mound on which the construction was carried out belonged to the Raja Kaladhvi and was surrounded by a dense forest at that time. Hafiz Hayat settled in the area and helped people with his spiritual charisma. Although the exact dates are not known yet according to popular belief it was at the time of Emperor Jahangir. The saint donated his entire land holding to the then state authorities for the cause of education. The main campus of UOG has been constructed on that very land donated by Hafiz Muhammad Hayat.
