First publication: coming soon: "Iran and the bomb: NUCLEAR CLUB BUSTED" by Ghani Jafar and Shams-uz-Zaman. Foreword: Foreword If commentaries and analyses emanating from Western think tanks are to be believed, Iranian nuclear programme is the worst thing that could happen to mankind. Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not considered a rational actor and he cannot be trusted with the Bomb at any cost. To obviate such an eventuality, all kinds of pressures: economic, political and military, have been brought to bear to deter Iran from achieving such a capability. The world sees the Iranian nuclear programme through the Western lens. Such attitude is not difficult to comprehend since most of the work done on this subject has been authored by Western scholars and opinion-makers. The Iranian point of view attracts little international attention or space. This is again understandable; most of us cannot read Persian and have little access to what the Iranians have to say about their nuclear programme. This, however, is no excuse for the attitude of the Pakistani strategic community which has adopted a strangely ambivalent approach towards this all-important issue. It is odd indeed because the Iranian nuclear programme will have long-lasting implications for our country. Ghani Jafar’s Iran& the bomb: Nuclear Club Busted is the first book on the topic by a Pakistani scholar. It is not difficult to discern where Jafar’s sympathies lie. He makes no bones about it. He is a veteran Iranian hand. He has worked in Iran and has been a keen observer of that country. He understands the ethos of the Iranian people and the working of their leadership. Based on his experiences and deep analysis, Jafar has tried to dispel the clichéd character of the Iranian nuclear programme. Drawing extensively from media reports, he has built a persuasive case. Not unnaturally, Jafar laments the Western double standards of tolerating Israel, an undeclared nuclear weapon State and providing India dual-use nuclear technologies without officially acceding to the capstone nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The last chapter outlining the regional context written by Shams-uz-Zaman is especially worth reading. It provides the Pakistani nuclear policy-makers relevant pointers. No matter what your official or unofficial position is on the Iranian nuclear programme, I would strongly urge you to read Ghani Jafar’s book. It will help provide you another perspective on a subject which has in recent years become extremely controversial.
