This new strategy adopted by the developed countries, coupled with the lack of high quality academic institutions in Pakistan, has resulted in sapping our nation of its talent. For the reversal of this brain drain and achieving our nation’s progress it is essential to establish a large number of academic institutions of high standard in our country. DHA Karachi, after making great strides in providing superior educational facilities and high quality living environment, has now decided to venture into imparting world class higher education in Engineering, Management, Medical Sciences and Liberal Arts. With the information technology making knowledge accessible anywhere in the world, acquisition of world class education domestically has become feasible. It is just a matter of investing the right amount of capital in mustering high calibre faculty and raising state of the art educational facilities that can make an institution, an excellent seat of higher learning. From its very inception, DHA has been striving hard to provide quality education to its residents at their door steps. To serve this end, it opened a number of educational institutions spread all over DHA, providing standard education from pre-school to HSSC / A levels with Bachelors and Masters programmes in Science, Arts, Commerce and Management disciplines. Major strength (approx 75%) of the HSSC / A level students studying in the Schools/Colleges of DHA belongs to Pre-Engg and Pre-Med groups. Non-availability of an Engineering/Medical University in DHA compels these students to seek admission elsewhere in the city. For a long time the students and their parents had strongly felt the need for a university in DHA, which could impart quality graduate and postgraduate level education in the disciplines of Engineering, Medical Sciences and Liberal Arts. Consequently, the Administration of DHA started planning for it. The process of construction of the campus for DHA Suffa University (DSU) started in the year 2002 when the charter was granted by the Sindh Government. The name Suffa is derived from that rectangular platform in Prophet's Mosque, where some companions of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) spent most of their time acquiring knowledge from him. It is meant to generate the same thirst for knowledge amongst the faculty and students of DHA Suffa University. A purpose-built magnificent campus with hostel facility was established in DHA Phase-VII (Ext). However, due to substantial rise in the number of female students applying for admission in DA College for Women Phase-VIII, the newly built campus was utilized as a second DA College for Women. Lieutenant General Muhammad Zahir ul Islam, HI(M), on assuming the command of 5 Corps and President Executive Board (PEB), DHA Karachi, in May 2011, directed DHA to excel in all domains of its endeavour, especially education. He instructed DHA management to optimize the DHA educational infrastructure and establish DHA Suffa University. Through the kind patronage and personal attention of Lieutenant General Muhammad Zahir ul Islam, HI(M), the dynamic leadership and pragmatic management of Brig Aamer Raza Qureshi, Administrator DHA and the thoroughbred efficient approach of Cdre (R) Talib Hussain, Director Education TI(M), the DHA Suffa University (DSU) was established on 30 Jan 2012 with the joining of Rear Admiral (R) Prof Dr Sarfraz Hussain, TI(M) & SI(M), as its first Vice Chancellor. Dr Ishrat ul Ibad, Governor Sindh, is the Patron of DSU while Lieutenant General Muhammad Ijaz Chaudhry, HI(M), Commander 5 Corps and President Executive Board, DHA is the Chancellor of the University. The Board of Governors of Suffa University includes eminent scholars like Prof. Dr Atta ur Rehman, former Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr Javaid R Laghari, the serving Chairman of HEC, Prof Dr Muhammad Qaiser, Vice Chancellor Karachi University and Prof. Dr Muzzaffar Mahmood, Pro Vice Chancellor, NED University of Engineering & Technology. With full support and dynamic leadership of Lieutenant General Muhammad Ijaz Chaudhry, HI(M), Chancellor and Chairman BOGs of DHA Suffa University, all essential preparations are being made to launch in a befitting manner the BBA/MBA Programmes and BE Programmes in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering disciplines in the first phase, from Fall Semester (Sep 2012). Later on, in the second phase, DHA Suffa University will launch MS/PhD programmes in Engineering disciplines and MBBS / BDS programmes.
