LAHORE GRAMMER SCHOOL

LAHORE GRAMMER SCHOOL

55-Main Gulberg, Lahore ,
The Lahore Grammar School was established in January 1979. The nationalization of educational institutions in 1972 had led to an alarming decline in the standards of instruction and facilities being provided in most schools and colleges. Interventions in the realm of education were therefore, critical to arrest this abysmal state of affairs. In 1978 the Government announced that it would welcome initiatives in the educational sector. Taking advantage of this, a group of women from varied professional backgrounds, including education, and with the shared objective of contributing in this field, decided to set up a girls’ school. Today Lahore Grammar School provides education to both boys and girls till A’ Level. It has extended its network to cater to the needs of the middle income group in its Landmark Schools. LGS has branches in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujrat. It offers quality education to the low income group through the Lahore Education Society School, entirely supported and funded by LGS. The philosophy of this institution is a holistic and dynamic one and one that appreciates diversity and stresses the importance of opinions based on rational and informed premises rather that on superstition, emotion and insufficient understanding of issues. Emphasis is laid on the understanding of concepts and creating a culture of thinking in the classroom. Education is seen as a broad and complex process of acquiring knowledge and understanding. We have taken several initiatives in the field of education including the promotion of the performing arts that the Board of Lahore Grammar School felt were being neglected at great cost to our cultural tradition and a healthier social milieu. In addition, the General Studies program was devised to make students more aware of contemporary issues, both national and world wide and their role not only in developing an understanding of these issues but prompting a desire to translate that knowledge into active commitment and take steps, where possible, to bring about positive change in their own environment. LGS also lays great emphasis on the teaching of regional languages so that students develop an appreciation of their cultural roots and a pride in the rich traditions of literature and music of their province. A critical element of our program other than a wide range of academic disciplines and music, sports, dance, mime, debate, drama, poetry recitation, is community service where students are encouraged to share their skills and learn from the courage and resilience of those less fortunate than themselves. The student body of the school has been raising money through bake sales in school to give scholarships to students at the Pakistan Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PSRD) since 1990. They have also been going to help children who are being prepared for the Matric at this institute. In fact L.G.S. takes great pride in the fact that it is a School system that gives 55% of its earnings in scholarships, fee waivers and donations to education in various forms. The school is affiliated with the Cambridge Board of International Examinations for the O and A-Level programs. The grading system applied in the senior levels is in line with the specifications of the Board and is indicated on the school transcript. The outstanding results attained by our students in these examinations reflect the importance given to our aim which is to maintain high standards in academics while not compromising our commitment to our motto to promote a wide range of activities that enrich not only the mind but the spirit, as well.

Allama Iqbal International Airport

Allama Iqbal International Airport

Allama Iqbal International Airport is the second largest civil airport in Pakistan, serving Lahore, the capital of Punjab province. Originally known as Lahore International Airport, it was renamed in 2003 for Muhammad Iqbal, the Islamic poet-philosopher who was a major advocate for the creation of the state of Pakistan, upon the opening of the new terminal building. The airport currently has three terminals: the Allama Iqbal terminal, the Hajj terminal, and a cargo terminal. The airport is located about 15 kilometres from the centre of the city. A total of 3,192,904 passengers have travelled through Allama Iqbal International Airport in 2009 making it the 2nd busiest airport in Pakistan. On 5 March 2010, the Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan released a tender for the expansion of the airport. The number of check-in desks will be doubled from 24 to 48, as will the number of immigration counters from 10 to 20. The terminal will also be expanded and the area which was strategically kept aside for future expansion when the airport was built will be fully utilised.HistoryAt the time of the creation of Pakistan, Walton Airport was the main airport of Lahore. When Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) acquired jet aircraft such as Boeing 720s, however, Walton was unable to handle the large aircraft. The Government of Pakistan thus decided to build a brand new airport, which opened in 1962 as Lahore International Airport and was able to handle aircraft as large as the Boeing 747.
