He started his legal career in 1973 has remained active in the bar, holding senior elected posts in bar representative bodies. Throughout his legal career he has been involved in cases which were pivotal in effecting major changes in various areas of law ranging from Constitutional, Human Rights to Criminal and Accountability matters. Some of his landmark cases are; determination of the powers & relations between the Federal Government & Provinces (1988), the "blind girl" (Safia Bibi) case (1983), introduction of provincial banking system independent of the Federal regulatory control, floor crossing in the National Assembly (1989), case of “Dissolution of the National Assembly" (1993), establishment of Military Courts to try civilians on charges under anti terrorist laws in 1998, challenge to the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 (which resulted in several amendments were brought about in the law), Reinstatement of the present Chief Justice of Pakistan (2007), Challenge to the military imposed Emergency rule in November 2007, challenge to the discriminatory National Reconciliation Ordinance 2007 (NRO). He has always been a very vocal Member of the Bar fighting for Human Rights, rights of women and Independence of Judiciary resulting in him facing contempt charges. He has held numerous positions including Ambassador at Large. He has also represented Pakistan in the United Nations Human Rights Sub Commission. He is an elected council member of the Commonwealth Lawyer’s Association (C.L.A) for the current term of 2009 2011 (South Asia region). He is member of Union International the Avocates (UIA), American Bar Association (A.BA) and of Law Asia. Mr. Sheikh is currently pursuing before a full Bench of Supreme Court of Pakistan challenge to 18th Constitutional Amendment (2010) which has altered the method of appointment of Judges.
