The foundations of the present education system were laid by Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah Aga Khan III, who established over 200 schools during the 20th century, the first in 1905 in Zanzibar and Balochistan, followed by schools in Dar es Salaam in 1906 and in Mundra, in India, in 1907. The Aga Khan Schools strive to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities and community life. It challenges its pupils to be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious. The School believes that while what students know is important, the true measure of a student’s education is the ability to analyse what they do not know.Admission to the School is an annual exercise based purely on merit and availability. Students are admitted to the first year of Early Chidhood Education and Development (ECED) at the beginning of each academic year. There are no quotas or reserved seats.Admission to all other levels is subject to seat availability. All applicants are required to sit for an admission test. To be eligible for admission, prospective students must score a minimum of 40 percent in the subjects tested. The admission process is ongoing from January to March with the academic year commencing in April annually.

Abbottabad Public School is located at an altitude of about 4500 feet. The verdant growth on the hills around makes it look like a piece of paradise. Climatically it is ideal for a residential educational institution. Winter is a bit harsh but otherwise the weather is pleasant and mild. This heavenly piece of land was initially chosen by Pakistan Railways in 1956 to establish a Model School which was named as "Pakistan Railways Public School, Abbottabad". The then Central Minister for Pakistan Railways Khan Sardar Bahadur Khan was the founder of the School, and Mr. M.A. Rehman was the pioneer Principal.
